Start with the right to drive

The first question is whether the destination recognises the traveller's national licence for the intended visitor status and length of stay. An IDP is a standardised translation companion; it does not replace the underlying licence or create driving entitlement by itself.

UAE government guidance states that UAE citizens and residents driving abroad are required to apply for an IDP, while the rules for visitors driving in each GCC country remain country-specific. Always carry the original national licence with any IDP.

IDA services and delivery coordination in the UAE

IFA UAE is the regional representation of the International Federation of Autotourism in the Emirates and a cooperation partner of International Drivers Association. Within this relationship, IFA UAE provides information support and may coordinate the international shipment and UAE delivery of documents after IDA completes its own independent service process.

The applicant deals directly with IDA through IDA's own external channels. IFA UAE does not receive or process applications, assess eligibility, collect service payments, approve or issue IDPs, renew documents, perform verification or guarantee acceptance by an authority or other third party. Its role is administrative and logistical delivery coordination only.

The driver may be eligible while the vehicle is not

Registration establishes the vehicle record, but it may not prove that the driver is authorised to export or temporarily take the vehicle across a border. Financed, company-owned, family-owned and rented vehicles require separate scrutiny.

Ask the owner, lender or rental company for explicit cross-border authority and confirm that the destination and transit countries are named where required.

• Original registration card and a clear copy stored separately.
• Cross-border authorisation matching the driver and travel dates.
• Finance or lease consent where the vehicle is encumbered.
• Rental agreement explicitly permitting each destination country.

Insurance must follow the whole route

A policy valid in the UAE may not automatically cover Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar or Oman. Confirm territorial cover, third-party requirements, border insurance, roadside assistance and the claims procedure before leaving.

Save the insurer's international contact number offline. Photograph the vehicle before departure and know which authority and insurer must be contacted after an incident.
