A phone in the hand is an enforcement issue
Abu Dhabi Police restates the federal penalty for distraction through mobile-phone use as AED 800 and four black points. The risk is broader than making a call: messaging, filming, browsing and handling the device can all remove attention from lane position and signals.
Prepare navigation before moving, mount the phone where permitted and stop in a lawful safe place before changing a route or reading a message. Being stationary at a traffic light is not an invitation to resume phone use.
If a task cannot be completed by voice control without taking attention from the road, postpone it until the vehicle is safely parked.
Four high-impact federal violations
AED 800 · 4 points
Applies to distraction through use of a mobile phone while driving.
AED 400 · 4 points
The driver and passengers must use the required restraints.
AED 1,000 · 12 points
The federal schedule also lists 30 days' impoundment for a light vehicle.
AED 1,000 · 6 points
Abu Dhabi Police cites this consequence when a minor-crash vehicle is not moved to safety where possible.
Federal baseline, emirate-level consequences
The federal schedule is not always the whole financial exposure. Abu Dhabi Police's January 2026 reminder states that running a red light can also engage the emirate's vehicle-impoundment law, including a AED 50,000 vehicle-release amount and a six-month driving-licence suspension in the circumstances described by that law.
For a rental car, the contract can add administration, recovery, loss-of-use or cross-border restrictions. Those are private contractual consequences, separate from the official fine, and should be read before the keys are accepted.
After a minor collision
In Abu Dhabi, the official process directs drivers to use the Saaed app or contact Saaed for minor incidents and, where safe and possible, move vehicles out of the live carriageway. Injury collisions require emergency contact through 999.
Protect life
Stop, assess injuries and call 999 when anyone may be hurt.
Clear danger
For a minor incident, move to the nearest safe place when official instructions and vehicle condition allow.
Use the local channel
Follow the police or approved incident-reporting process for the emirate.
Inform the rental or insurer
Use the contract's incident number and do not authorise repairs independently.
